Rough Tor

Rough Tor has a very distinctive contour. It looks like a submarine owing to the military paraphenalia that adorns this isolated tor. As the name suggests the area around the tor is indeed rough, especially if you're approaching from the south. However, it may be that Rough Tor is a derivative of Rowter. Rough Tor is a frontier post between High Dartmoor and the less austere valleys that drain the water soaked plateau.
Park by Holming Beam (SX 591765), walk up the track, and turn right down a short steep track towards the Cowsic. Cross over the wooden bridge and head up towards Beardown Tors. Then walk NE down to the West Dart where it loops around at Foxholes. Continue up the West Dart valley until you get to the spread out boggy ground south of Brown's House. Walk up the slope (NW) and get to Rough Tor. Admire the views then head due west across some rough ground towards Devil's Tor. Then head south across the plateau towards Lydford Tor. Over the wall and then head back to the Cowsic bridge.
A 6 mile walk. Some rough ground between Rough Tor and Devil's Tor and some unexpected wet ground between Devil's and Lydford Tor. Army areas all around.
