Yes Tor

Yes Tor and High Willhays are the highest points of Dartmoor - and of southern England. They are often termed the "roof of Devon". They are over 2000 ft high. The views from either peak are superb in good weather. Yes Tor is a strange name and probably derives from East Tor. Yes Tor has an impressive west face.
We parked up a track between West Mill Tor and Rowtor at SX 591913 which is approached from the Okehampton military camp. Turn immediately right once you've crossed the bridge at SX 591931. Follow the track southwards and when it forks take the left path that leads towards Dinger Tor. At the boundary stone (SX 588891) head west up to High Willhays. This is a bit of a climb over roughish ground. After admiring the views from the highest point in southern England take the ridge path to Yes Tor, then clamber down the clitter north east to West Mill Tor and back down to the car.
This is a fairly easy walk since you follow a military road for much of the way towards High Willhays. However, as the photos show you are high up here and the weather can be quite unpredictable. It is bang in the middle of the military area. Allow 2 - 3 hours.

The military railway points at SX 593911. This was a target railway where a small trolley carrying wooden targets was used to provide shooting practice for soldiers.

The summit cairn of High Willhays - the highest point in southern England. Although High Willhays is not the most impressive Dartmoor peak the views are almost literally breathtaking.
A cloud of hail approaching High Willhays from the north.
On the track from High Willhays leading to Yes Tor. The hailstorm hasn't hit yet.
The hailstorm blows away from Yes Tor toward inner Dartmoor.
Going down the north eastern slope of Yes Tor at SX 582903 towards West Mill Tor. Redaven brook flows down the valley. Another hail storm coming in on the left.
Looking back at Yes Tor from West Mill Tor. The winter hail is still drifting over.
Going down eastwards from West Mill Tor (SX 588910). Rowtor is just below.
A view of Rowtor, West Mill Tor and Yes Tor from the track at SX 588926. Quite a different world down here...
