Easdon Tor

Easdon Tor (SX 730823) lies on the east side of Dartmoor not far from the town of Moretonhampstead. It is probably not as well known or visited as some other areas of Dartmoor. The tor lies at the western part of Easdon Down. There are more outcrops on the eastern part of the down which are known as Easdon Hill. The views from Easdon Tor are excellent and worth the small effort involved in getting there.
We parked near Barracott. Access isn't terribly easy and there isn't much space to park. A 4 wheel drive is advisable especially in wet weather. Allow 1 hour for this walk.

Looking towards North Dartmoor from Easdon Tor. There are clouds over Cosdon Hill on the horizon. The hill in the middle background is Meldon Hill near Chagford.
Easdon Tor with its triangulation pillar of 439m. Part of this tor is known as Whooping Rock. Some say this was a place where children were brought to be near sheep - an old cure for whooping cough. Another explanation is the noise that the wind used to make through a now disturbed logan rock.
A strange looking granite pillar with the popular woods of Lustleigh Cleave in the background. This was known as "Figgie Daniel" and is on the eastern side of Easdon Down.
